A proposed quarry near a Manitoba bear sanctuary sparks concern over noise, dust, and traffic harming orphaned cubs.
A proposed limestone quarry within half a mile of Black Bear Rescue Manitoba, the province’s only facility for orphaned black bear cubs, has raised alarms over potential harm from noise, dust, vibrations, and heavy truck traffic.
The rescue group warns these disturbances could cause chronic stress, respiratory issues, and disrupt critical recovery efforts for vulnerable cubs.
With no other facility in Manitoba able to provide similar care, officials stress the project could jeopardize the sanctuary’s mission and the survival of rehabilitated bears.
The company, Amrize, says it is complying with regulations, but the rescue plans to speak at a public hearing to voice concerns.
