Ports of Indiana opens Irish office to expand trade and support new direct container route to Burns Harbor.
Ports of Indiana has opened its first international trade office in Ireland, based in Cork and Kildare, to boost cargo shipments and support a new direct container service between Europe and Indiana.
Brian Dooley, a maritime trade veteran with nearly 30 years of experience, will lead the office, leveraging his background at the Port of Cork to build trade partnerships.
In 2024, Ireland shipped $32.4 billion in goods to Indiana—more than any other country—yet most did not use Indiana’s ports.
The initiative supports the upcoming Burns Harbor Container Terminal on Lake Michigan, which will begin trial shipments later in 2026, offering the only direct ocean container route into the Chicago metropolitan area.
The port authority, which operates three ports across 2,800 acres and handles 50 million tons of cargo annually, is expanding its inland port system with a $100 million investment and has partnered with the Port of Cork and Port of Antwerp-Bruges to improve connectivity.
