Ontario warns public about invasive water soldier plant spreading in lakes and rivers.
Ontario residents are warned to watch for water soldier, an invasive plant from Europe and Asia, after its first detection in Lake Simcoe in summer 2024 and subsequent discoveries in the Trent River, Bay of Quinte, Cook’s Bay, and several eastern Ontario lakes.
Resembling a pineapple top or aloe, it has sharp, serrated leaves up to 40 cm long that can cut swimmers and forms dense mats that harm native species and disrupt water activities.
Likely introduced through ornamental water gardens, it is now illegal to possess, import, or release under Ontario’s Invasive Species Act.
Officials urge boaters to clean, drain, and dry equipment to prevent spread and encourage the public to report sightings via hotline or online tools with clear photos.
