Nigeria's Court of Appeal overturned a 2024 ruling, ordering a new hearing for former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai’s rights case, citing unfair process, while he remains in lawful detention.
The Court of Appeal has overturned a 2024 Federal High Court decision dismissing former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s fundamental rights suit against the Kaduna State House of Assembly, ruling that he was denied a fair hearing due to improper service of a hearing notice and denial of the right to respond to a counter-affidavit.
The appellate court found the trial court lacked jurisdiction and ordered the case remitted to the Federal High Court for a fresh hearing before a different judge.
Meanwhile, the ICPC stated it did not seek a new detention extension for El-Rufai, confirming his continued lawful remand under a court-ordered 14-day extension, with the next hearing scheduled for March 31, 2026.
El-Rufai has also filed a separate criminal complaint alleging coercion by ICPC officials to abandon politics, seeking N1 billion in damages.
