New Zealand launches a $1.2M dog desexing program in Auckland and Northland to reduce uncontrolled breeding and dog attacks.
New Zealand has allocated $468,000 from the Lottery Minister’s Discretionary Fund, matched by $700,000 from the SPCA, for a 12-month dog desexing programme in Auckland and Northland starting April 1, 2026.
The $1.2 million initiative targets unregistered and roaming dogs, aiming to desex about 3,000 dogs to prevent around 7,500 puppies in the first year and reduce dog-related incidents, including recent fatal attacks.
The programme will address access and cost barriers in rural areas and is part of broader calls for reform, including updating the Dog Control Act 1996, creating a national dog bite database, enforcing breeding rules, and securing ongoing funding for desexing and education.
