New Zealand fast-tracks its first major steel plant, a recycled steel facility in Hampton Downs, to cut emissions and boost domestic supply.
A new steel plant in Hampton Downs, Waikato, has been fast-tracked for approval under New Zealand’s Fast-track Approvals Act, becoming the first infrastructure project of its kind.
National Green Steel Limited’s facility will process 200,000 tonnes of recycled steel annually using electric arc furnace technology, reducing reliance on imports and cutting carbon emissions.
It will source scrap from collection yards in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Putāruru, and Christchurch, keeping material domestically.
The project, approved after a five-month review, supports local supply chains and sustainable infrastructure development.
As of March 12, 2026, 49 projects are in progress under the Fast-track system, with 33 referred by the Minister for Infrastructure.
