Māori artists debut Paerangi: Venice at the 2026 Venice Biennale, showcasing cultural heritage through innovative, collaborative art.
In April and May 2026, four Māori artists—John Turi-Tiakitai, Kereama Taepa, Neke Moa, and Suzanne Tamaki—will present Paerangi: Venice at the 61st Venice Biennale, hosted at CREA Cantieri del Contemporaneo on Giudecca Island.
The project, building on a 2024 New Zealand initiative, features two weeks of wānanga, collaboration, and site-responsive art using weaving, performance, digital media, and augmented reality.
Rooted in Māori traditions and ancestral knowledge, the works explore cultural continuity, identity, and global connection.
Supported by Creative New Zealand and private donors, the initiative highlights contemporary Māori art’s international presence and fosters cross-cultural dialogue.
