In March 2026, two Yunnan marathons—Qujing Luoping and Ruili—boosted cross-border ties, drawing international runners and promoting tourism.
On March 15, 2026, the Qujing Luoping Grand Blossom Marathon in Yunnan Province attracted over 20 international runners from eight countries, including Thailand, Slovenia, and Singapore, alongside Chinese participants, racing through 66,667 hectares of golden rapeseed flowers.
The event, dubbed “the year’s first marathon running into spring,” highlighted Yunnan’s use of marathons to promote cultural and sports tourism, with international runners praising its scenic beauty and organization.
The race strengthened ties with Thailand, following cooperation discussions after the 2025 Chiang Mai International Marathon, and spurred interest in joint “marathon plus tourism” itineraries.
Earlier in March, the Ruili China-Myanmar Cross-Border Marathon drew 3,998 runners from multiple nations, including 227 from Myanmar, with spectators from both sides cheering at 35 points along the route, including near the border, symbolizing friendship and cultural exchange.
Officials described both events as fostering regional cooperation, mutual understanding, and people-to-people connections.
