Lebanon transferred 137 Syrian detainees to Syria under a repatriation agreement, easing jail overcrowding and improving bilateral relations.
Lebanon has transferred 137 Syrian detainees to Syria under a February agreement, marking the first phase of a deal to repatriate nearly 300 Syrians who served at least a decade in Lebanese prisons.
The prisoners, mostly held on terrorism or armed group charges linked to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, were released from Roumieh and Qobbeh prisons and handed over at the Masnaa border crossing.
The move aims to ease overcrowding in Lebanese jails and improve diplomatic ties after strained relations following Assad’s ouster in December 2024.
Both nations have expressed interest in normalizing cooperation, though no formal ceasefire talks with Israel have been scheduled amid ongoing hostilities.
