flag India will mandate domestic solar ingot and wafer use in clean energy projects starting June 2028 to boost local manufacturing and reduce Chinese reliance.

India will require clean energy projects to use only domestically produced solar ingots and wafers starting June 1, 2028, under an expanded Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) framework. The policy, aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese imports, supports India’s goal of 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The initial ALMM List-III for these components will be released only after at least three manufacturers with 15 GW combined capacity are operational, including matching ingot production. Projects already underway are grandfathered. The move strengthens domestic manufacturing, enhances supply chain resilience, and aligns with prior mandates for locally made solar cells starting June 2026 and assembled panels in state projects.
