The Colombo West International Terminal, opened in April 2025, handled over one million TEUs in its first year, the fastest ramp-up in Colombo’s history and among the top global terminals to achieve such volume in a single year.
Operated by a consortium including Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd., the $800 million, fully automated deep-water terminal features a 1,400-meter quay and 20-meter depth, enabling it to serve ultra-large container vessels.
Located on a key Asia-Europe trade route, it leverages digital systems, modern cranes, and electrified equipment to boost efficiency and reduce turnaround times.
The terminal’s rapid success reflects strong shipping line partnerships and its growing role in transshipment traffic, especially for cargo linked to India.
The milestone strengthens Colombo’s status as a major global hub and expands APSEZ’s international footprint, which now includes 15 ports in India and four overseas.
