Canada invests $1B to boost domestic production of artillery shells and nitrocellulose by 2029.
Canada is investing over $1 billion to expand domestic munitions production, funding new facilities in Ingersoll, Ontario, and Repentigny, Quebec, under the Canadian Defence Industry Resilience program.
The initiative, announced by Defence Minister David McGuinty in February 2026, aims to boost production of 155-mm artillery shells and launch domestic nitrocellulose manufacturing within three years.
The funds support IMT Precision and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, a U.S. contractor’s Canadian subsidiary, as part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthen national defence industrial capacity.
