A Brantford student leads a petition against closing GELA Day School’s current site, fearing the move will harm vulnerable students.
A Brantford student, Scarlett Parker-Feeney, is leading a petition against plans to shrink the Grand Erie Learning Alternatives (GELA) Day School on Rawdon Street to just two classrooms and move its programs into traditional high schools by September.
Students and staff fear the change will erase the program’s supportive, individualized environment that helps those struggling with mental health, bullying, or academic challenges.
While the school board says the shift aims to create a more consistent, equitable system with expanded course and extracurricular access, critics argue it risks re-exposing vulnerable students to the same environments they left behind.
The petition has gathered nearly 550 signatures.
