Alberta has made new, stricter rules about doctor-assisted death. It is now illegal for minors, people with only mental illness, and people who can't make decisions to get this kind of help. You can't ask for MAiD in advance, and it can only be given if death is likely to happen within 12 months. Healthcare providers or facilities can't send patients to other provinces for assessments, but they can choose not to do so for moral reasons. However, patients must be given other options. The law, which was passed in December 2025 by Premier Danielle Smith, is meant to protect people who are weak and uphold the sanctity of life. Justice Minister Mickey Amery stressed that hope should be easier to find than death.
