A 20-year-old student pleaded guilty to causing a fatal crash in Brisbane that killed QUT PhD candidate Arjun Srinivas in 2024.
A QUT PhD student, Arjun Srinivas, died in 2024 after being struck by a vehicle on Brisbane’s Kelvin Grove Road when driver Airlia Paige Holman failed to see a red light for seven seconds.
Holman, a 20-year-old fellow student, pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, claiming she thought the light was green while driving with loud music.
Srinivas, who was researching YouTube’s influence on news consumption, suffered fatal head injuries and died eight days later.
The court heard she had a history of speeding offenses and was distraught during sentencing.
Judge Jennifer Rosengren called the crash avoidable and sentenced Holman to two and a half years in prison, with four months served before the rest suspended, and imposed a two-year driving ban.
QUT continues to honor Srinivas’ research and legacy.
