Washington now allows free distribution of its mifepristone stockpile to improve abortion access post-Roe.
Washington has passed a law eliminating the requirement to recoup costs when distributing its stockpile of mifepristone, the abortion pill, allowing free distribution and coordination between state agencies to identify recipients.
The change, signed by Governor Bob Ferguson, follows the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade and aims to improve access amid ongoing legal challenges.
The state previously purchased 30,000 doses in 2023, which were returned to the manufacturer as they expired, and another 17,600 doses in 2025 that can be exchanged for new pills at no cost.
A separate misoprostol stockpile expired in February and likely was destroyed.
The law, effective immediately, is part of broader efforts to protect reproductive health access, including restored funding and a new insurer fee.
