U.S. Navy awards Gecko Robotics $71M to use AI robots for faster, more accurate ship inspections in Pacific Fleet.
The U.S. Navy has awarded Pittsburgh-based Gecko Robotics a $71 million, five-year contract to deploy AI-powered wall-climbing and flying robots for inspecting 18 ships in the Pacific Fleet.
The robots will assess hulls, flight decks, and confined spaces, detecting corrosion, fatigue, and defects up to 50 times faster and more accurately than manual inspections.
This initiative aims to reduce maintenance delays, improve fleet readiness, and support the Navy’s goal of increasing operational ships amid growing strategic competition with China, whose fleet now exceeds 370 vessels.
The technology, integrated with AI analytics, enables predictive maintenance and real-time data sharing, with potential adoption across all military branches.
