A U.S. Army general who led military support for Ukraine, Maj. Gen. Antonio Aguto, left classified maps on a train in Europe for 24 hours in April 2024 and later suffered a concussion after consuming large amounts of high-alcohol Georgian brandy during a trip to Kyiv in May, according to a March 2026 Pentagon report.
The documents, stored in a tube without proper security packaging, were recovered unharmed.
Aguto, who retired in August 2024, acknowledged responsibility for the loss despite not being the designated carrier.
Witnesses reported he appeared disoriented, disheveled, and incoherent during a high-level meeting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The investigation found no evidence of intentional misconduct but noted concerns about a toxic workplace environment, recommending referral to the U.S. European Command Special Security Office.
