A Ukrainian man who fled to Ireland in 2022 was sentenced for illegally claiming €4,868 in Jobseeker’s Allowance while living in Scotland from September 2022 to April 2023, failing to report his move abroad.
Judge Valerie Corcoran called the breach of trust “unacceptable,” noting he exploited Ireland’s support for Ukrainian refugees, and imposed a suspended three-month prison term contingent on 90 hours of community service, pending a probation review.
The State recovered part of the funds through monthly repayments of €10, and Teliuk is no longer receiving benefits.
His solicitor cited homelessness in Ireland, mental health struggles from war trauma, and lack of understanding about benefit rules, though the court did not accept these as mitigating factors.
The case was adjourned to May 8th for a suitability assessment.
