Two Ansaru leaders confessed to terrorism training in Libya and attacks in Nigeria, prompting a trial-within-trial.
Two suspected Ansaru commanders, Mahmoud Muhammed Usman and Abubakar Abba, confessed in Abuja’s Federal High Court to receiving weapons and IED training in Libya from instructors from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria.
They admitted membership in Ansaru, a Boko Haram breakaway group linked to terrorism, kidnapping, and armed robbery across Nigeria, and said they founded the group in Jigawa State in 2012.
Abba also confessed to a 2020 attack on a Nigerian Army unit and the kidnapping of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s in-law and two government officers, and pledged allegiance to JNIM, which allegedly supplied arms.
The prosecution said confessions were voluntary with legal counsel present, while defense counsel challenged their admissibility.
Judge Emeka Nwite ordered a trial-within-trial to assess the evidence, adjourning the case to April 13, 2026.
