A third person has died after a fire likely caused by a faulty lithium-ion battery in an Ottawa seniors' building.
A third person has died from injuries sustained in a high-rise fire that broke out Saturday night at a 19-storey building on Somerset Street West in Ottawa’s Centretown.
The fire, reported around 9:30 p.m. on March 14, occurred in a unit managed by Ottawa Community Housing and served seniors.
Firefighters found three people unconscious inside and one on a balcony; one died at the scene, two later died in hospital.
Two others were injured.
Heavy smoke and flames hampered response efforts.
Early investigation suggests a faulty lithium-ion battery may have caused the fire, but the exact cause remains under review by Ottawa Fire Services and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.
