Tampa updates police immigration policy to comply with state law, ending restrictions on disclosing immigration status for crime victims and witnesses.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor has updated the city’s police immigration policies after Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier warned she could be removed for defying state law by restricting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
The revised policy removes language that barred disclosure of immigration status for crime victims and witnesses, ensuring officers won’t inquire into or investigate immigration status when responding to calls.
While the city maintains it won’t mandate participation in federal immigration programs, six officers and two supervisors remain in the 287(g) program.
The changes, effective immediately, aim to balance state legal requirements with public safety and community trust, particularly among immigrant populations.
