South African coach Rulani Mokwena was detained in Algeria for undeclared cash and fined, with help from the South African embassy.
South African football coach Rulani Mokwena was detained at Algiers' Houari Boumediene Airport in March 2026 for attempting to leave with about €16,000 in undeclared foreign currency, valued at roughly R307,000.
Algerian authorities confiscated the cash and imposed a fine of 50,000 dinars, equivalent to about R6,500.
Mokwena, who recently departed MC Alger after winning the Algerian Super Cup, reportedly did not know Algeria’s currency declaration rules.
He is expected to join Libyan club Al Ittihad SC.
The South African embassy confirmed it is assisting him.
