Margaret Ryan, the Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement director, has resigned after serving for just over six months.
Appointed in September 2025 by SEC Chair Paul Atkins, Ryan led efforts to refocus enforcement on fraud and market manipulation while reducing compliance-driven cases.
Her departure comes amid staffing reductions, a decline in enforcement activity, and the dismissal of several crypto-related investigations.
The SEC confirmed her resignation took effect immediately, with Sam Waldon named as acting director.
A permanent replacement is expected in the coming weeks.
The agency stated enforcement operations remain ongoing and stable.
