New York's annual amphibian migration project helps thousands of salamanders and frogs cross roads safely during spring breeding season.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has launched its 18th annual Amphibian Migrations Project, urging drivers to be cautious on warm, rainy nights in March and April as salamanders and frogs migrate to vernal pools for breeding.
Volunteers across the Hudson Valley and Tompkins County, supported by Cornell University and local groups like TCAMP, help thousands of amphibians cross roads safely, preventing mass casualties.
Since 2009, over 1,000 volunteers have assisted more than 51,000 animals, while documenting nearly 58,000 live amphibians and over 25,000 road deaths.
The effort highlights growing threats to amphibians, with nearly half of species globally at risk, and promotes community science, conservation, and public awareness.
