Martin Zak, 36, was ordered held without bond after being charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father, 69-year-old Omaha deacon John Zak, who was found dead with multiple stab wounds and dismembered body parts discovered at their home.
Authorities say Martin, who was at a mental health program when his father went missing, was driving his father’s vehicle, had his wallet, and discarded his phone on the interstate.
Prosecutors allege he used a firearm in the crime, fled arrest, and stole the vehicle.
John Zak, a longtime church leader, was reported missing after failing to attend work and a youth group meeting.
Martin, adopted as an infant, faces additional charges including use of a deadly weapon and theft.
