Manitoba's U.S. trade rep, Richard Madan, earns $387K annually in a newly opened office focused on advancing agricultural interests.
Manitoba’s Washington, D.C. trade representative, former TV reporter Richard Madan, earns a $387,000 Canadian annual salary as part of an $800,000 office budget, covering travel, health insurance, pensions, and up to $37,000 in hospitality and diplomatic expenses.
The office, based at the Canadian embassy and staffed with a research assistant, opened in November 2025 and has engaged U.S. officials and Canadian industry leaders, including organizing a “hill day” event and attending the State Agricultural and Rural Leaders Summit.
While opposition leaders question the high pay and lack of measurable trade results, the government says Madan is actively advocating for Manitoba’s interests, particularly in agriculture, and that the office’s priorities and deliverables remain confidential.
