Kenyan court charges two men, including a Chinese national, with smuggling rare ants, citing biopiracy concerns.
A Kenyan court has charged Charles Mwangi, 35, and Zhang Kequn, 27, a Chinese national, with wildlife trafficking and conspiracy over an ant-smuggling operation.
Zhang was arrested at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with over 2,000 live ants, including valuable Messor cephalotes species, while Mwangi was linked to a shipment seized in Bangkok and found with ants in syringes and containers.
Prosecutors cited CCTV footage showing Mwangi supplying ants to Zhang and evidence of prior illegal activity.
Both pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody, with a next hearing set for March 27.
The case reflects growing concerns over biopiracy and the illegal trade in exotic insects.
