India strengthened food safety with new reforms, testing over 518,000 samples and penalizing violations between 2022 and 2025.
India has launched new food safety reforms to strengthen oversight, improve compliance, and build consumer trust, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Between 2022–23 and 2024–25, the FSSAI analyzed over 518,000 food samples, issued 88,192 penalties, secured 3,614 convictions, and canceled 1,161 licenses, mainly for high-risk items like milk, ghee, and paneer.
The agency conducted 56,259 risk-based inspections, expanded testing infrastructure with 252 labs and 24 referral labs, and deployed 305 mobile testing units across 35 states and union territories.
FSSAI also supports states with training, licensing, and initiatives like 'Eat Right Campus' and 'Eat Right School', while enforcing standards set under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
