India plans to extend insurance coverage to 25,000 gram panchayats by designating them as the core unit for rural insurance delivery, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the Lok Sabha on March 17, 2026.
The move, enabled by 2024 IRDAI rules and a 2025 law allowing 100% foreign investment, aims to boost rural penetration and expand health insurance access.
The sector reached Rs 1.17 lakh crore in FY25 and covered 58 crore lives, with programs like PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana offering Rs 2 lakh coverage for Rs 436 annually and 26.79 crore enrollments.
