Illinois forms task force to boost college attainment after missing 2025 goal, aiming for equitable, seamless education system by 2026.
Governor JB Pritzker has created a working group to establish new higher education attainment goals for Illinois after the state fell short of its 2025 target of 60% of adults holding a college degree or credential, with only 57.4% achieving that status by 2023.
The group, including state agency representatives and advisors from health, corrections, and human services, will assess workforce programs, engage industry stakeholders, and recommend strategies to build a seamless education system from preschool to graduate school.
It will also examine persistent disparities in outcomes, particularly for low-income and underrepresented groups, and deliver recommendations by December 1, 2026.
The effort follows progress in affordability, with 44% of in-state undergraduates paying no tuition in FY2025, up from 24% in 2018, as Illinois prepares for a future where over 70% of jobs may require postsecondary education.
