A Gujarat committee has submitted a report urging a Uniform Civil Code to ensure gender equality and legal consistency across religions.
A high-level committee led by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai has submitted a three-volume report on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
The report, based on research, public consultations, and visits to districts, recommends a uniform legal framework for marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption across all religious communities, emphasizing gender equality and women’s rights while respecting Gujarat’s cultural diversity.
The committee included legal, administrative, and social experts.
The submission marks a key step in Gujarat’s push for legal uniformity, following Uttarakhand’s 2025 UCC enactment.
The state government will now review the draft.
