Guangzhou Shipyard wins contract to build two new ferries for Scotland’s Northern Isles route, replacing older vessels and improving freight and passenger service.
Guangzhou Shipyard International has been chosen as the preferred builder for two new 140-meter freight-flex ferries for Scotland’s Northern Isles route, replacing older vessels on the Aberdeen to Kirkwall and Lerwick service.
The contract, pending final approval by March 24, 2026, follows a competitive procurement process evaluating technical and financial criteria.
The new ferries will boost freight capacity, reduce travel times, and carry up to 200 passengers during peak periods.
Officials from CMAL, Serco NorthLink Ferries, and the Scottish government praised the selection for enhancing reliability, efficiency, and support for remote island communities.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with delivery projected within five years.
