Patrick Jones, a former Arizona Rattlers linebacker, is facing misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after allegedly leaving his dog in a locked car with slightly cracked windows for about three hours during a team practice on March 15 in Glendale.
Witnesses reported the dog was panting and without food or water from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and officers responded around 5:30 p.m. Jones initially denied ownership but later admitted he was the dog’s owner, telling police he could not care for it and had nowhere else to keep it.
The dog was removed and taken to a shelter; its current health status is unknown.
Though not arrested, Jones will face charges.
The Arizona Rattlers said they had already released him prior to the incident.
No charges have been filed as of March 16, but authorities plan to pursue them.
