BBC asks U.S. court to dismiss Trump’s $10B defamation suit over unaired documentary edits.
The BBC has asked a U.S. court to dismiss Donald Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit, arguing the Florida court lacks jurisdiction because the documentary in question was never aired in the U.S. or Florida.
The lawsuit stems from edited footage in a 2024 documentary that combined segments of Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech to suggest he incited violence, though the original speech also urged peaceful protest.
The BBC maintains the edits were editorially justified, factual, and protected under free speech, and that Trump’s re-election demonstrates the clip did not harm his reputation.
The broadcaster also contends Trump failed to prove actual malice.
The case remains pending, with a trial tentatively scheduled for February 2027.
