Johdeci Te Kani, a 20-year-old Rotorua man, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the December 2022 death of 18-year-old Fabien Takerei-White during a high-speed crash on State Highway 33.
Te Kani, driving a modified Toyota Starlet with a learner’s licence, was traveling at 134–141 km/h in a 30 km/h zone near Okere Falls, ignoring warning signs.
The car lost control, rolled over, and ejected both occupants.
Takerei-White died from severe injuries.
Te Kani had alcohol and cannabis in his system.
The plea was entered in Rotorua High Court on March 16, 2026, with sentencing set for April.
