A 16-year-old girl faces a maximum three-year youth sentence for setting her 15-year-old classmate on fire at a Saskatoon school in 2024, leaving the victim with severe, lasting injuries.
A 16-year-old girl, who set her 15-year-old classmate on fire at Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon in September 2024, is set to be sentenced after both Crown and defence recommended a maximum youth sentence of three years—two in secure custody and one under community supervision.
The attack, which left the victim with 40% burns, required multiple surgeries and long-term recovery, including lasting physical and psychological trauma.
The offender, then 14, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and causing bodily harm to a teacher, and has been diagnosed with mental health conditions including early-onset schizophrenia, autism, and pyromania, along with a history of trauma.
The court heard the incident stemmed from a deteriorating friendship marked by obsession and threats.
Justice Krista Zerr will deliver the sentence on Monday.
