A U.S. anti-LGBT group helped pass a harsher Senegalese law criminalizing homosexuality, raising global health concerns.
A U.S. "pro-family" group, MassResistance, collaborated with Senegalese activists to advance a stricter anti-LGBT law passed in March 2025, which doubles prison sentences for same-sex acts to 10 years and criminalizes the promotion of homosexuality.
The group, which opposes LGBTQ+ rights and views homosexuality as a public health threat, claims the Trump administration’s shift away from promoting LGBT rights abroad has enabled such efforts.
It has also engaged with activists in Ghana pushing similar legislation.
While the exact influence on the law’s passage remains unclear, this marks the first known case of a U.S. group aiding a successful anti-LGBT law in Africa since Trump’s 2025 return to office.
Critics, including health experts, warn the law may worsen the HIV/AIDS epidemic by deterring vulnerable populations from seeking care, especially amid rising arrests and reduced foreign aid for public health.
