Two young adults died and 11 others were seriously ill in a Kent meningitis outbreak linked to a nightclub event.
Two people have died from meningitis in Canterbury, Kent, one of whom was a University of Kent student and the other a sixth-form student. Eleven others are seriously ill, mostly young adults between the ages of 18 and 21. The UK Health Security Agency said that the outbreak was linked to a recent event at Club Chemistry, a nightclub that can hold 1,600 people, where people may have been exposed. More than 30,000 people have been contacted, and close contacts are being offered antibiotics. The club has trouble keeping track of who comes because they only pay at the door and scan their security IDs. Officials are keeping an eye on symptoms like fever, rash, headache, and confusion and are urging people to get medical help right away. The investigation is still going on, and the exact strain of meningococcal bacteria is still unknown.
