Ontario may let stores choose to open on Victoria and Family Day, with no forced work and holiday pay still guaranteed.
Ontario may soon allow retailers and shopping malls to choose whether to open on Victoria Day and Family Day, following Premier Doug Ford’s discussions with the retail council.
While the government has reportedly approved a plan to permit provincewide shopping on these holidays, changes to the Retail Business Holiday Act are required.
The decision to open would remain voluntary for businesses, and employees would retain their rights to holiday pay and the ability to refuse work.
The current law bans retail operations on several major holidays, including Victoria Day and Family Day.
