A Nigerian journalist was assaulted while covering an event, sparking outcry over press freedom.
A journalist with MITV, Habeeb Adejobi, says he was assaulted on March 11 while covering a screening event at Lagos’s Kosofe Local Government Secretariat, allegedly by individuals linked to the local government chairman’s office, including his driver.
Adejobi claims he was beaten with a plank and attacked by NSCDC officers after refusing to hand over his camera, was taken to a police station where his phone was seized, and later released for medical treatment.
The chairman, Moyosore Ogunlewe, denied any assault occurred, saying Adejobi was questioned for lacking ID and misrepresenting his media affiliation.
The Journalists for Democratic Rights condemned the incident as a serious violation of press freedom, urging police and the Lagos State House of Assembly to investigate and calling for stronger protections for journalists covering public events.
