Nigeria urges U.S. to aid West Africa’s security with support, not troops, to avoid instability.
Nigeria's Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar urged the U.S. and other nations to support West Africa’s security efforts through intelligence, equipment, and logistics rather than direct military intervention.
Speaking at Chatham House, he highlighted regional successes like ECOMOG in Liberia and Sierra Leone, stressing that local-led initiatives such as the Multinational Joint Task Force are more effective.
He warned that foreign troop deployments could worsen instability in the Lake Chad region, where cross-border threats and weak governance persist.
While the U.S. conducted joint airstrikes in late 2025 and deployed a small team in early 2026 for training and intelligence, Nigeria insists on maintaining full control over its forces.
The government continues promoting regional cooperation, including the Accra Initiative, to strengthen collective security without compromising sovereignty.
