Nicolas Sarkozy faces retrial in Paris over alleged 2007 campaign funding from Libya, despite no proof funds were received.
Nicolas Sarkozy is facing a retrial in Paris over allegations he sought illegal Libyan funding for his 2007 presidential campaign, a case that previously led to a five-year prison sentence he partially served in 2025.
Though no direct evidence of funds being received was found, a lower court convicted him of criminal conspiracy for allegedly arranging contacts with Libya’s Gaddafi regime to secure support.
The appeal, ongoing until June 3, means he is presumed innocent.
The case is part of a series of legal challenges since his presidency, including convictions for influencing a judge and illegal campaign financing.
His wife, Carla Bruni, is also linked to separate bribery allegations.
