Newcastle City Council is exploring expansion of fenced off-leash dog parks, including a site in Tarro, relocation of the Wallsend park, and a new facility in Ward 2, to address unequal access across the city.
With over 64,300 dogs registered as of January 2026, the council aims for one fenced park per 30,000 residents and at least one in each ward.
Improvements to amenities like seating, water, bins, and shade are planned, along with public education on responsible ownership, including a 10-meter buffer from playgrounds.
A future “Pups in the Park” event will offer free microchipping at Tarro Reserve.
The council will review updates to the 2019 Dogs in Open Space Plan and community feedback.
