Melbourne trials contactless payments on four train lines, excluding concession holders and transfers.
Melbourne has launched a trial allowing full-fare passengers on the Craigieburn, Upfield, Ballarat, and Seymour train lines to pay fares using contactless cards, iPhones, or smartwatches instead of Myki cards. The trial, running through April 2026, aims to test system reliability ahead of a potential citywide rollout. Passengers transferring to trams, buses, or other train lines must use a Myki to avoid overcharging. Concession holders are not included. The change follows upgrades to station readers and the transfer of the Myki system to Conduent Business Services. The move aligns Melbourne with other major Australian cities that already use contactless payments.
