Maharashtra handed keys to 864 new homes in Mumbai’s BDD Chawl redevelopment, part of Asia’s largest urban renewal project.
On March 16, 2026, Maharashtra handed over keys to 864 new homes in the Naigaon phase of the BDD Chawl redevelopment project, a major step in Mumbai’s urban renewal.
The government, overseeing the project directly, is replacing aging 160 sq ft chawls with modern 500 sq ft flats across 1,000 acres, aiming to complete all relocations by 2029.
The initiative, part of Asia’s largest urban renewal effort, includes infrastructure upgrades, preserved community ties, and 12 years of free property tax.
Over 3,000 homes are expected to be ready by year’s end, with a focus on providing affordable, sustainable housing for longtime residents.
