Israeli forces destroyed 93.5% of Gaza’s cemeteries since Oct. 2023, violating humanitarian law and potentially constituting war crimes.
The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor reported that Israeli forces have destroyed 93.5% of Gaza’s cemeteries since October 2023, with 39 fully bulldozed and 19 partially damaged, leaving only four intact.
The group said the widespread destruction, documented across 62 cemeteries in Gaza’s five governorates, appears deliberate, aiming to erase historical ties, obstruct identification of remains, and inflict psychological harm.
It cited exhumations, mixing of bodies, and lack of proper documentation as violations of international humanitarian law, calling the actions potential war crimes under the Rome Statute and urging the International Criminal Court to investigate and issue arrest warrants.
