EU publishers urge swift ruling on Google’s search favoritism under Digital Markets Act.
European publishers, tech firms, and startups are urging the EU to finalize its nearly two-year investigation into Google’s search practices, warning delays undermine the Digital Markets Act and harm competition. They demand a formal ruling, cease-and-desist order, and fine against Alphabet, arguing Google’s alleged favoritism of its own services distorts the digital market. The probe, launched in March 2024 under the DMA, centers on whether Google manipulates search results to boost its products like Shopping and News. While Google has proposed changes, critics say they fall short. The EU had pledged to resolve DMA cases within 12 months, and regulators previously announced formal charges. The Commission has not yet responded to the latest appeal.
