Eighth-grader Genevieve Ramey won the 93rd annual 21 WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee in Youngstown, correctly spelling "comminatory" to earn a $2,000 scholarship and a spot in the 101st Scripps National Spelling Bee.
She defeated over 60 students from Mahoning and Trumbull counties, with Isaac Sosnowski and Violet Sheen taking second and third place, each receiving $1,000 and $500 scholarships.
The competition featured challenging words like “netiquette” and “graticule.” Ramey, a swimmer and clarinet player, credited her parents and teacher Laura Luoma for her preparation.
