A 2022 death in a Burnaby RCMP cell sparks a coroner’s inquest into the case of Joshua Beek, a 31-year-old man found unresponsive after arrest for public intoxication.
A coroner’s inquest begins March 16, 2026, in Burnaby to examine the 2022 death of Joshua Colton Beek, a 31-year-old Comox Valley man found unresponsive in a RCMP cell after being arrested for public intoxication.
The inquest, led by coroner Carolyn Maxwell and a five-person jury, will review testimony but not assign legal blame.
According to B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office, Beek was cooperative, conscious, and mobile upon arrival, and officers followed monitoring protocols.
However, the IIO’s former chief civilian director criticized holding intoxicated individuals in police cells, calling the practice outdated and unsafe, and urged the government to treat such cases as health issues with alternatives like sobering centers or on-site medical care.
